The workshop has been focused on the most innovative aspects of detection systems and techniques developed for fundamental physics studies and applications. Many recent activities investigate the correlated production of photons or charged and neutral particles in a wide dynamic range, as well as that of particles at extreme energies in environments characterized by very high radiation density. The common requirement of such studies is the availability of appropriate detection systems, capable of working even in hostile environments. The conception, implementation, simulation tools and related application implications were discussed during the different sessions. The workshop also addressed with particular attention the issues related to detection techniques that have a strong impact on medicine and on the monitoring processes of radioactive waste, these issues of great social impact. The workshop has been organized by INFN (Sezione di Catania and Laboratori Nazionali del Sud ) and the University of Messina.
